Human Development & Family Science Distribution List

A degree in child and family studies requires a minimum of 42 earned credits in HDFS, and includes the following:

  • HDFS 201 - Diverse Families
  • HDFS 243 -  Human Sexuality
  • HDFS 339 -  Human Development: Early Childhood
  • HDFS 350 -  Family Resource Management
  • HDFS 359 -  Human Development: Adolescent to Young Adulthood
  • HDFS 370 - Research Methods and Evaluations in HDFS
  • HDFS 431(G) -  Family Issues in Gerontology
  • HDFS 432(G) -  Families in Crisis
  • HDFS 437 -  Environments for Young Children
  • HDFS 439(G) -  Parent Education
  • HDFS 440 -  Family Law and Public Policy
  • HDFS 445 - Family Life Education and Ethics
  • HDFS 447 -  Internship in Child and Family Studies

Minor Courses

A degree in Child and Family Studies requires a College of Liberal Arts-approved minor.

  • History (6 hours)
     
  • Modern Language (10 hours)
    • 101, 102, and 201 courses in ARAB, ASL, FREN, SPAN, or GERM
  • Math (6 hours)
    • MATH 102 or 103 with 104 or MATH 105
    • STAT 214
  • Sciences (9 hours)
    • (CHEM, GEOL, OR PHYS) AND BIOL
    • Note: Environmental Science does not count
  • Communication (3 hours)
     
  • Arts (3 hours)
    • Includes courses in VIAR, MUS, THEA, or DANC
  • Behavioral Science (6 hours)
    • SOCI 100 or SOCI 241
    • PSYC 255
  • Electives (5  hours of free electives)


Notes:
All HDFS courses must be passed with a C or better.
Only 1 D is allowed in the minor.
All pre-requisites and co-requisites must be met (see course descriptions)
45 hours must be completed at the 300-400 level.
All substitutions must be approved by the HDFS advisor, director, and department head.
